Rhea County Gets Homeland Security Grant

Rhea County is among counties qualifying for competitive federal grants under the Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program, Congressman Zach Wamp said.

“Local and county public safety organizations are often the first help on the scene when an accident or other public safety event occurs,” Congressman Wamp said. “From natural disasters to man-made tragedies, our nation’s first responders are dedicated and selfless individuals who put their lives on the line to make us safer everyday and it is important we all help ensure they have the best equipment possible so they can do this most important job more effectively.”

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security today announced the following grant awards:

Anderson County Emergency Management gets $66,153 to purchase a portable chemical identifier system for the detection of hazardous materials.
Marlow Volunteer Fire Department in Clinton will receive $9,721 for a thermal imager to enhance firefighting and rescue capabilities.
Jefferson County Emergency Management in Dandridge will receive $2,462 for a QSA Model 102 chemical and biological, radiological and explosives sampling kit.
Jefferson City Police Department will receive $5,826 for a Optim Freedom View fiber optic scope that will allow officers to view and assess dangerous situations prior to entering the area.
The Rhea County Sheriff's Department in Dayton will receive $46,889 for an advanced vehicle tracking system.

The Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program allows smaller law enforcement and emergency responder agencies to purchase specialized equipment they might otherwise not be able to afford.
