About Hamilton County

Hamilton County is home to Chattanooga, one of Tennessee's four major cities. Located in the southeastern part of the state, Hamilton County was established in 1819. Chattanooga is the county seat of government. Alexander Hamilton, for whom the county is named, served as Secretary of the Treasury under President George Washington. An activist prior to the Revolutionary War, Hamilton served with distinction during the war and in the Constitutional Convention that followed in 1787.

Points of interest in the county include Harrison Bay and Booker T. Washington State Parks. Chickamauga Lake (Tennessee River) provides recreational water the entire length of the county. The Chickamauga National Military Park and the National Cemetery and Confederate Cemetery provide historical interest along with Reflection Riding. Geographical points include Lookout and Signal Mountains and Nickajack Lake, Prentice Cooper State Forest, Falling Waters State Natural Area and the Trail of Tears State Scenic Trail. Hamilton County was formed from land that earlier had been part of Rhea County.
