About Jefferson County

Created in 1792 from parts of Greene and Hawkins Counties; named in honor of Thomas Jefferson.

Douglas Lake covers a large part of eastern Jefferson County and a small portion of Cherokee Lake in the northwest part, has easy access from the county. The county seat is Dandridge. Dandridge is a small town of approximately 1,900. It is the 2nd oldest town in Tennessee, founded in 1793 and the only one in the country named after Martha Dandridge Washington . The courthouse was built in 1845 and is one of the oldest in the country that is still in use today. The courthouse displays artifacts and relics from the Civil War and World Wars, plus on display is a Marriage Bond of famed frontiersman, Davy Crockett and his wife Polly Finley.
